Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers to the most common questions about using Amal Invest for your halal and ethical investing needs.

Company Management & Exclusions

Can I remove specific companies like Amazon, Nvidia, Apple, etc.?

Yes. With Amal, you can exclude specific companies using the custom blocklist filters, regardless of their shariah compliance screening. This gives you complete control over which companies appear in your personalized fund.

What happens when a company in my fund becomes non-compliant?

We sync updates monthly. If something changes (e.g., Apple becomes non-compliant), we'll reflect that in your fund — but we don't automatically sell unless auto-invest/rebalance is turned on.

This gives you control while staying up to date with the latest compliance changes.

Account Types & Brokers

Does Amal support tax-deferred accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s?

Currently, no — our brokers (Alpaca) don't support IRAs or employer-sponsored retirement accounts. Many users use Amal for taxable accounts and track purification/dividends for personal accountability.

Trading 212 does support ISA accounts for UK users.

Investment Management

Can I stop investing or withdraw at any time?

Yes, you can stop investing anytime. There's no lock-in period. You can withdraw your funds through your connected broker (Alpaca or Trading212), and it usually takes 1–2 business days to settle.

How often is my fund updated or rebalanced?

We sync updates monthly to reflect changes in company compliance or ETF holdings. You can also trigger a manual rebalance or enable auto-invest if you want continuous updates.

What happens to dividends?

Dividends are either:

  • Reinvested automatically (if auto-invest is enabled), or
  • Held as cash in your broker account (you can manually reinvest or withdraw)

Who Can Use Amal

Can I use Amal if I'm not Muslim?

Absolutely. While our filters are inspired by Islamic principles, many users — Muslim and non-Muslim — use Amal to avoid companies that:

  • Engage in war profiteering
  • Harm the environment
  • Exploit labor
  • Support apartheid or genocide

Ethical investing is for everyone.

Investment Advice & Guidance

Do you offer financial advice or portfolio recommendations?

No — we are not a financial advisor. Amal is a tool that helps you filter and rebuild existing ETFs based on your values. You choose which funds to filter; we help you apply your preferences and automate it.

Security & Safety

How secure is my investment and data?

Your investments are held securely with regulated brokers (Alpaca or Trading212). Amal does not hold or access your money directly. Amal cannot access your money directly without your express permission. As an additional layer of security to your investments, Alpaca / Trading212 ensures that withdrawals can only be made to a bank account in your name.
